Our debut vintage of Pinot Noir, the 1998, was one of the best years in recent
Oregon wine history. The early October harvest was under bright blue cloudless
skies. Tony's sore back and purple fingers are proof of his hands-on winemaking.
He crushed the fruit using the age-old, gravity-fed technique - lifting each
small tote up so the grapes could easily tumble down into the crusher and then
into one-ton bins. The wine was fermented and placed in small French oak barrels
before being transported to Etude Wines in California where it was aged in cask
and bottle.
The 1998 Pinot Noir is a wine that reflects its hillside origins. Deep crimson
in color, this wine immediately reveals its intense nature. Generous layered
fruit suggesting blackberry briar and ripe blueberry fill the palate. The tannins
and acid are commensurate with the concentrated flavors and body delivering
a broadly dimensioned texture. This wine has the classic structure of an age
worthy Burgundy.
